Ceramics
A collection of my Ceramics works varies from sculpture to functional, or both . Doing ceramics also gave me an excuse to be listening to countless episodes of true crime podcasts at the same time.
Ceramic chess set, with a touch of Vietnam
Ceramic chess set with hand-painted tiles showcase iconic Vietnamese school tiles patterns. While half of the pieces capture the vibrant essence of Vietnamese culture, including some of my personal perspectives (like my middle school uniform painted on the pawns of one side), the other half is the traditional, common white pieces often seen on a regular chess board.
On the “Vietnamese” side of the board I also incorporated Vietnamese imageries like áo dài, Vietnamese soccer player, lotus, Ha Long bay,...
The blended cultures factors in this piece is an attempt to capture my true heritage, and culture understanding of both side as a first generation immigrant in the US. Through this piece, I wanted to show part of my culture and make it work with something outside of my old environment, creating a “blended” piece.
This is a hand-built piece that I used for experimenting with Raku glazing/firing. Understanding the unexpredictable results of Raku firing, I chose to make two identical bowl with contrasting glaze to experiment if they will come out contrasting one another.
The idea of incorporating “balance” with “unpredictability” also emphasize one important philosophy that no matter what happens in life, there will always be something to balance it out.
