Holding On:
Identity Through Possesions

October 2022

Immigration is more than crossing borders — it's a transformation shaped by loss, insecurity, and the search for belonging.
For many immigrants, objects become emotional lifelines, both as ties to the past and tools for rebuilding stability.

This photo book explores “immigrant clutter” as a response to scarcity
— not just keepsakes, but an accumulation of goods that reflect regained access, control, and comfort.

Holding On: Identity Through Possessions documents five Vietnamese immigrant households connected to the artist. Through intimate images, it reveals how possessions become vessels of memory, identity, and resilience — echoing the “immigrant scarcity mindset,” shaped by the experience of coming from nothing.

Inspired by the artist’s move to the U.S. in 2018, the project reflects on how material clutter preserves culture while guarding against future loss. It asks viewers to consider the emotional weight objects carry — and what we hold on to, and why.
